Hypertension is diagnosed base on specific references, including age, general and height. Three stages of hypertension are: Pre-hypertension, stage I hypertension and stage II hypertension.
Stage II hypertension is a SBP of greater than 160 mm Hg or a DBP greater than 100 mm Hg.
Stage II hypertension is characterized by signs of left ventricular hypertrophy found on physical examination or chest X-ray, electrocardiogram or echocardiogram.
All persons classified with either stage 1 hypertension or stage 2 hypertension should be treated and have a therapeutic goal of achieving a BP of, 140/90 mm Hg.
